Casus
Friends around a table under a lamp while a spy in a trench coat watches with a magnifying glass

CASE FILE

Who is the spy?

Everyone at the table knows the secret word, except one. Casus is a party game you play by passing a single iPhone around: ask sharp questions, give careful hints and catch the spy before the timer runs out.

How to play

No cards, no moderator, nothing to set up. A round takes as long as the timer you pick (3 to 20 minutes).

  1. Add players and pick categories

Type the players' names (3 or more), choose one or more word categories, the number of spies and the round time.

  2. Pass the phone

A handoff screen shows whose turn it is. Each player flips their card in private: innocents see the secret word, the spy only sees that they are the spy.

  3. Ask, hint, bluff

Start the timer and take turns asking each other questions about the word. Be specific enough to prove you know it, vague enough not to give it away.

  4. Vote and reveal

Vote for the player you suspect. If the spy is caught, the innocents win, unless the spy names the secret word in a last guess. Then the spy still wins.

Roles

Play the classic way (innocents vs. spy) or add special roles for bigger groups.

  • Spy: doesn't know the word and has to bluff their way through.
  • Innocent: knows the word and hunts for the spy.
  • Detective: starts out knowing one player they can trust.
  • Faker: doesn't know the word and wins alone by getting the most votes.
  • Accomplice: knows the word and who the spy is, and covers for them.
  • Forgetful: an innocent who forgot the word and must follow the hints.

Hidden spy mode

Turn it on and the spy doesn't know they're the spy: they get a decoy word like everyone else and have to work it out from the hints. Similar to the "undercover" variant.

Frequently asked questions

Is Casus free?

The app is free to download and your first 3 games are free, with no ads. After that, an optional Premium subscription (weekly or yearly) unlocks unlimited games, all 14 categories, custom word lists and stats. You can cancel anytime in your App Store settings.

Does it need internet?

No. The whole game runs on one iPhone, so you can play offline: on a road trip, at a cabin or on a plane. Nobody else needs to install anything.

How many players do you need?

At least 3. There is no fixed maximum: bigger groups can add more spies (up to one per three players) and special roles like the Detective or Accomplice.

How is it different from Mafia, Werewolf or Spyfall?

Mafia and Werewolf need a moderator, play over night and day phases and knock players out one by one. Casus has no moderator and no elimination: one short round, everyone plays to the end. It is closest to Spyfall, but you guess a secret word from a category instead of a location, and you don't need a deck of cards, just one phone.

Is it family friendly?

Yes. It is rated 4+ on the App Store, has no ads, no chat and no accounts, and player names stay on the device. There is even a Kids category, so younger players can join family game nights.

Which languages does it support?

English, Turkish, German, French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and Traditional Chinese; all 1,400 words are localized too.

Ready for game night?

Grab one phone, gather 3 or more friends and find out who's lying.
